Rise and shine

I am becoming an early riser. Against my will.

I used to sleep until 7 a.m. on weekdays. Now I am very fortunate to sleep past 6. This is caused mostly by chronic pain: I have a bum knee and an even bigger bum of a cat. Both are the cause of the chronic pain.

Good morning, sunshine.

While I have a fine doctor that is working on solving the knee pain, I fear there is no intervention that will save me from Thai. While he sleeps snuggled between me and my husband at the foot of the bed most of the night, almost every day before dawn he decides to move. Onto my hip, my back, and sometimes even my bum knee.

It’s like he knows, people.

Of course he doesn’t understand that I have to be alert to earn a living all day while he can nap at will. I think he really enjoys our “alone time.” After I let the dogs upstairs to pester my husband, I usually check messages on my phone and computer and that is when Thai gets me all to himself.

Morale of the story: If you want to sleep until at least sunrise, carve out some alone time with your cat during the day.

  1. Hope you feel better, Nona! Bum knees can be..well…a bummer. And as for Thai, perhaps he’s trying to help? Isn’t there something out there about the healing power of animals or something? Or, maybe, he’s just being a cat… :-)

    Get well soon!

  2. Oh, just look at that sweet little boy face! He could not possibly be a bum! Your story does remind me of my cat Gracie though. She’s decided that Saturday and Sunday are no longer different from the rest of the week. She thinks that I need to be awakened at 7am every day so I can get up and give her water, out of her cup, out of the bathroom sink. Nevermind that she has a fresh bowl of water in the kitchen, that’s just not good enough. She’ll jump next to my head, yell in my face and then go sit at the bathroom sink and wait. She certainly is spoiled – I wonder how she got that way?! Must have been my husband…..

  3. Cats will do what cats will do…and that means utterly annoying the heck out of their caretakers because they want something. They probably think it’s cute or something, so thankfully our cats mostly stick with our schedule…whether it’s waking up at 6am to get ready for work, or we sleep until 10 on a Saturday after a late night out.
