Yesterday I posted about a nasty disease that is spread to cats via tick bites. While there aren’t a lot of bobcats and other wild felines in this area, there are some and I felt it was worth letting you know so you can protect your outdoor kitties.
Let me add one more warning to that: Only use parasite preventatives specifically intended for cats. Flea and tick serums are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE between kitties and pooches.
There is a bug repellant in K9 Advantix, for example, that is extremely toxic to cats. I was surprised last summer to find this same ingredient, permethrin, was used on a hat I bought for my husband from Gander Mountain.
That hat, which he only wears at the beach or in the pool, is banished to the garage and he has to scrub his hands after he puts it away.
The takeaway here is to always be sure to follow label directions for flea and tick meds, which are certainly not created equally safe for canines and felines.
