The season of giving

It’s that time of year when we all feel in a generous mood and remember that it feels so good to give to those we care about. And I can about you, my dear blog readers, for sticking with me this year through a long absence and making me feel so good about the decision to revive the Happy Wag blog.

So do I have some goodies for you.

First, I have a lovely book from prolific (and ironically named) dog author Jon Katz. “Dancing Dogs” is a collection of stories from the New York Times best-selling author, and I would love to send it to one reader.  Just post a comment about something funny your dog (or dogs) have done lately. It doesn’t have to be holiday-related but if it is, all the better.

A winner will be chosen at random next Monday.

And keep checking back the rest of this week for more book giveaways, some for dog lovers and some for kitty fans.

Our Boston Terrier is a champion sleeper. She slept so hard last week that one of her legs must have fallen asleep. When she got up and hopped down off the couch, she staggered a moment and then promptly walked in a half-circle and ran smack into the piano. Then she sat down and looked really confused. “Why did you put that thing there?”

When I was younger we had a dog we called “Andy”. We named after my grandfather so our grandparents would let us keep him. It worked, by the way. After my grandfather died, Andy, the dog, was sitting on my sister’s lap when he jumped down and licked the picture on the table beside her. He only licked the side of my grandfather’s picture.

I don’t have any dogs, just my cats, but I wanted to say again how happy I am that you brought the blog back Nona. Hopefully soon a post on how Thai is doing :) . Happy holidays to you and your brood.

When I first got Molly, my sheltie, we lived in an apartment. So you can say that her puppyhood was somehow restricted. She didn’t know what it was to be outside by herself, since we didn’t have a yard, or what it was to chase other furry creatures, since she would only go outside on a leash, except when we went to the dog park (however we all know that no furry creatures venture into the dog park).
In the last year, we moved into a house with a fenced in yard, and needless is to say that Molly is in heaven! She gets to go out and sunbathe all morning, or just sniff until she drops. Well in the last month we have had this bunny move in near our house. Well, Molly discovered it the other day and it was a good chase until she managed it to corner the bunny. We were screaming at her thinking the worse, when she leans forward in her puppy play bow and starts wagging her tail and then runs away. That’s when we realize that she is playing tag with the bunny, and that it is probably time for us to consider adopting a little brother or sister for her.
So there it goes I have a dog that likes to be chase by bunnies!

Miss Molly has new treats. They are Milk Bone Minis (5 calories each). She gets 3 when she does a “good girl.” Lately she has taken to eating 2 and hiding 1. This morning when I went to put my tennis shoes on, it was full of minis!

Christmas came early for me this year.
I got a great new pal today from the SPCA named Buddy.
He stole my heart and is healing the hole left by the passing of my other dog three weeks ago.
    Merry Christmas!!!

Chesney has never been an early-morning fan, but he has really gotten since cooler weather has set in. Normally he lies under the bed while I’m in the shower, but the other morning, after doing his business, he headed straight for the bedroom. When I looked for him, he was sitting beside the bed staring straight at it. I asked if he wanted up and he put his front paws on the side of the bed waiting to be lifted up. As soon as I sat him down, he bunched up the covers to his liking, snuggled in and promptly fell asleep. I had to physically remove him from the bed to make it up before going to work, which did not make him happy!

I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. Snicker was the first. He’s a 15 year old blind, white mini-poodle who I got from the Humane Society. He needed a friend, so I went to the pound and got Penny; now a 10 year old mutt who looks like a little red fox. Penny is very needy and not just a little annoying at times. I explain that he is Snicker’s pet, not mine. Then a friend found a pregnant cat in a park in Blacksburg and I ended up with this mom: a Russian Blue and one of her offspring – a Siamese. They quickly all became one big happy family. Kind of. Snicker and Penny are best buddies. Penny doesn’t seem to care one way or another about the cats. Penny is in her own Penny: “feed me, pet me” world. But but Chaiyya the Siamese, and Lilah, the mommy cat are unwelcome additions to Snicker’s family…when he knows they’re there. Luckily for them he can’t see them and is often unaware of their presence, so they like to sit near him and stare. It’s quite a funny site. My saying is “What Snicker doesn’t know, won’t hurt him.”

My German Shepherd-Siberian Husky mix, Kira, is a little over 2 years old, and Christmas is, without question, her favorite holiday. Last Christmas she made the trip with me to meet the rest of the family and the rest of the dogs as we all got together in Houston, Texas.
Unfortunately, Kira is also a bit of a troublemaker. Last year she was lucky enough to stumble upon the family’s fully baked ham, and she wasted no time leading all of her new canine companions straight to it. Those three pups went to town on that ham, going at it like a pack of wolves. I guess that was their version of Christmas dinner.

If you are thinking about getting something for a puppy this Christmas, consider visiting This Awesome Site to pick something out. They have the best selection of personalized dog collars, tags, and plenty of dog toys.

Mike D: I am so sorry for the loss of your dog but I am happy for you that you found a new friend at the shelter. I wish you and Buddy the best.

  11. Nona Nelson | December 17, 2012 at 2:26 pm

Fincastle Mom and Tami: Your stories both gave me a much needed laugh. Thanks.

  12. Nona Nelson | December 17, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Aw Liz, your story was touching.

  13. Nona Nelson | December 17, 2012 at 2:28 pm

Leisa: I have about given up making the bed in the morning because it bothers the canine crew to have to move.

  14. Nona Nelson | December 17, 2012 at 2:29 pm

LB: Cats know what they can get away with, and I believe there is nothing they enjoy more than pulling one over on a dog.

  15. Nona Nelson | December 17, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Marie: There are lots of great dogs that need loving homes. Molly needs a playmate :-)

    Hi Nona,

I’m new to your blog but I can already see that it’s a wonderful blog. I see that you have a good sized and loyal following. I’m glad you’ve decided to revive it.

I’d rather see a dog lover win the prize since I’m more of a cat person but I appreciate the chance to win. However, I looked on Amazon and that book has a lot of great reviews. Who ever wins Dancing Dogs by Jon Katz will surely be quite happy.

I love to give year around, but I especially love to give during the the Winter holidays. It feels really good.

I’ll be sure to stop by again within the next couple of days to read more of your posts.

    Happy Holidays,

    =^..^= Hairless Cat Girl =^..^=
