Pups in the pool

This week's video, well, it's not exactly a video. But it's fun, I promise.

Click here to see a photo gallery of the pooch pool party held last Saturday at Frog Pond Pool in Montgomery County.

Enjoy your weekend!

An Olympic hero and his dog, Herman

Like many millions of other fans, I cheered for swimmer Michael Phelps as he made Olympic history last week. And if he wasn't loveable enough, he's also crazy about his dog. Here's a pre-Olympic promo spot he did for NBC featuring his pooch, Herman. Enjoy the closing ceremonies.

Sherlock is on the case

We have a video today instead of a photo of the week, and a link to a great story by reporter Shawna Morrison about a local working dog. Enjoy.

WYTHEVILLE — Forget the cape, the smoking pipe and the unorthodox ways Sherlock Holmes used to search for clues.

His canine namesake relies instead on floppy jowls, a big nose and some high-pitched praise from the human who refers to himself as “his daddy.”

Sherlock, a 14-month-old, 88-pound bloodhound is the latest addition to the Virginia State Police’s Wytheville division, which responds to calls in Pulaski, Giles, Wythe and Carroll counties, among others. His specialty is sniffing out people. He is not trained to search for drugs or explosives and isn’t aggressive like some police dogs are trained to be.

Crystal the therapy dog

Ride along with Crystal, a pet therapy dog with Carilion Health Systems, and her chauffer, Jan Stice, as they make a house call for a hospice patient.

The empty cages

This is a video from the HSUS during a raid on a puppy mill in Hickman County, Tenn. The agency confiscated more than 700 dogs and pups, which are now being sent to shelters all over the South and eastern coast. At the end of the video, a screen will ask you to "donate below" because this was embedded on the Web site's donor form. Donate to the national organization if you like, or the Hickman County Humane Society, or your local shelters. But the best way to close down puppy mills is to never buy anything from a pet store that sells puppies.

Monday morning video

Here's a video from last Saturday's dog wash at the Kirk Family YMCA. The event was a fundraiser for the RVSPCA. If you got your pooch shampooed at there, post a comment about your experience.

Going to the chapel

It's June and there are plenty of lovers walking down the aisle this month.
But could the bride be carrying a leash instead of a bouquet?

In honor of my anniversary on Tuesday, Here is a video from Petside.com about including your pet in your wedding.

Hanging with the mean kitty

Yo, what up blog readers? Just kickin' it this morning with this chill cat video. Enjoy.

An engineer's guide to cats

This is a little lengthy, but well worth it if you love kitties. And if you are considering adopting a cat, this is a very helpful guide.

Avoiding problems at the dog park

Here's a video from petside.com about making the most of your trip to the dog park, useful information if you go to Six Wags, or to the new public park when it opens.

If I can add one thing not metioned in the video: Don't stand around chatting with other pet parents. I mean, chat all you like, but keep moving at a leisurely pace. A crowd of stationary people will tend to make dogs territorial, cause tempers to flare and otherwise spoil the fun for the pooches.

Besides, you need the exercise, too. Right?

Doggie diets

Okay, it's a little cheesy (no pun intended) but this video from Petside.com has some good information about pet obesity.

Litter prevention

Volunteers at Angels of Assisi trap free-roaming and feral cats and bring them into the clinic to be spayed and neutered. The cats also receive vaccinations and other veterinary care.

The clinic celebrated its one-year anniversary in March and has spayed and neutered more than 800 cats.

The feral cat clinics are held the third Sunday of each month. For more information, call Alley Cat Angels at 344-8707, ext.111.

Dock dogs

I am still pining away for summer. I am dreaming of shorts and flip-flops and sunny days and fun on large bodies of water. And fun with dogs near large bodies of water.
So here is a video from roanoke.com taken at the Bassmaster's fishing tournament last year on Smith Mountain Lake. Keep dreaming.

Oh, summertime!

I am like a kid at this time of year, counting down the days until summer. I have grown weary of winter, as mild as it has been here, and cannot wait for warm days spent near water.

If you, like me, feel nostalgic for summer fun, enjoy this video.

Can't we all just get along?

Relationships need time to grow and evolve. See how one cat and one puppy worked out their differences and embraced their diversity. Watch the videos in order to appreciate the journey.

Saturday morning funny

Last week I wrote about new medical research that indicates that having a kitty as a pet can greatly reduce your chance of dying of cardiovascular disease.

However, you should know that not feeding your kitty when he is hungry can result in severe trauma to the head.
