One block of Church Avenue in downtown Roanoke to become two-way

The City of Roanoke has announced that the block of Church Avenue between Market Street and Jefferson Street will become two-way on Dec. 30.

Here’s the full release:

Work on the Market Garage is expected to be completed in March 2010. As part of the renovation, the entrance to the deck is being relocated to Luck Avenue adjacent to the former Fire Station No 1. To facilitate access into the deck, the block of Church Avenue between Market Street and Jefferson Street will be converted from a one-way street to a street carrying two-way traffic.

While some preliminary work has already been accomplished, Transportation Division staff expects to implement the actual conversion to two-way traffic on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Some of the traffic control measures in this block will remain in temporary locations to accommodate construction. At such time as the parking deck is completed and consideration is given to upcoming construction involving Center in the Square, permanent measures will be put in place.

As part of this effort, the signal at the intersection of Church Avenue and Market Street will be removed. That signal is no longer warranted and has been taken out of service to accommodate the construction for the past year. No traffic problems have been observed during this time. The multi-way stop currently in place will remain on a permanent basis.
