    The current sentiment seems to be running toward: No, there’s not enough parking. And the parking should be free. And because it’s not, the commenters opt to shop someplace other than downtown.

    Spilman Thomas & Battle launches new practice group

    The law firm Spilman Thomas & Battle, which has an office in Roanoke, has formed a group to offer legal services to community banks. Here is a press release from the firm:

    U.S. Cellular helps 22 Va. teachers fund projects

    Twenty-two Virginia teachers received a total of $11, 272 to fund classroom projects. through U.S. Cellular’s “Calling All Teachers” campaign. Here is a press release from the wireless carrier:

    More than 20 teachers in Virginia received the exciting news from U.S. Cellular that their classroom projects had been funded through the company’s Calling All Teachers campaign. For a second year, the wireless carrier partnered with philanthropic website DonorsChoose.org to fund $1 million in creative and impactful classroom projects submitted by public school teachers. The donation of $11,272 will benefit more than 3,400 students in Virginia. Read more »

    McDonnell seeks tobacco funds to lure biotech company

    Gov. Bob McDonnell paid an impromptu visit to the executive committee of the state’s tobacco commission Monday to make a pitch for grant funding to help Virginia lure a biotechnology company.

    The governor gave the impression that he’s going all out to lure a biotechnology company to the state after a visit to California’s Silicon Valley.

    “This is a particular opportunity that uses some very interesting technology that will be very helpful across the scale in the tobacco region to provide jobs for agriculture but also to provide some very significant and very high paying jobs in the biotech area,” McDonnell said.
