New mobile app Roundpop lets users share location through social networks

A new mobile app claims to “take the creepiness out of sharing your location” through social networks. Roundpop lets users share their location in the background using zip code. Created by recent Virginia Tech graduates Austin Marusco and Kenan Pulak, Roundpop also notifies users of where their friends live and displays a map showing the user’s preferred locations. The app is available for free through the App Store.

Here is a press release from Roundpop.

BLACKSBURG, Va., May 16, 2012 –A new location-based social network allows users to comfortably re-connect with friends and interests.

Roundpop is a new ambient-location social network that lets you easily share your location in the background by zip code. It provides a high-level map view of the things you care about most.

Roundpop goes to great lengths to take the “creepiness” out of sharing your location. First, all locations are based off zip codes. This kind of broad location update gives users peace of mind when sharing location in the background. Plus, users can share their, manually entered, residence zip code if they don’t like the idea of background updating. Now people can share location comfortably knowing they’re in control.

Roundpop will also alert you if you’re in a friend’s residence zip code. So, you’ll be notified if a friend lives nearby when travelling. This allows you to set friends and interests once, then sit back and let your favorite things come to you.

Don’t have any other friends using Roundpop? No problem. Roundpop can pull in your friends’ residence locations directly from Facebook and Twitter. Now everyone can find their favorite friends and interests immediately.

Recent Virginia Tech Computer Engineering graduates Austin Marusco and Kenan Pulak created Roundpop.

“There are a few location-based social networks that save you from having to check in all the time. But, none let you share your location comfortably,” said Marusco.

Chillcamp LLC will be showcasing Roundpop at Techcrunch Disrupt Startup Alley in New York City, New York on Monday, May 21, 2012.

Roundpop is available today for free on the App Store.

Good luck @ Techcrunch. This app is a huge improvement to the social media apps.
