VSCPA Educational Foundation awards $44,000 in college scholarships

Selected college students are receiving some help from the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation. VSCPA awarded college scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year. Area recipients include Eric Negangard of Christiansburg, Owen Brown of Blacksburg and Phillip Stucki of Stafford. All three students are attending Virginia Tech.

Richmond (June 19, 2012) — The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) Educational Foundation recently selected its college scholarship recipients for the 2012–2013 academic year. The VSCPA Educational Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting business and accounting education, rewarding academic excellence and encouraging students to pursue promising careers as Certified Public Accountants (CPA).

This year, the Foundation awarded $44,000 in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and minority scholarships to 25 accounting college students across Virginia. The Foundation awarded 11 named scholarships, including five new offerings: the VSCPA Past Presidents/Chair Scholarship, the Kearney & Company Scholarship, the Michael E. Mares Scholarship, the Verus Financial Partners Scholarship and the William T. McDermott Scholarship.

Scholarship applicants must be currently enrolled or have been accepted in an accounting program at a Virginia college or university. Other selection criteria for the awards include overall academic performance, entry essay, faculty recommendation(s) and community and/or extracurricular activities.
