New fund opens access to Virginia Tech research

Publishing research findings has gotten a little easier for the faculty and students at Virginia Tech. An open access subvention fund reimburses fees that come with publishing in open access scholarly journals. Faculty, staff, graduates and undergrads are welcome to apply for  up to $1,500 per article and  $3,000 per year through the fund. CIT, VDOE host Hackathons to cut through K-12 big data

Various locations in Virginia will host a series of hackathons Oct. 19-20 to find ways to use K-12 data from Virginia’s Longitudinal Data System. The Center for Innovative Technology invites programmers and developers  for a coding session to build applications using data from the VLDS.

An area event will take place at TechPad in Blacksburg. Programmers and Developers interested in the hackathons must register in advance at http://www.apps4va.org/hackathons.html. Registration is free, and check-ins begin at 6 p.m.

This event is part of an initiative with the Virginia Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Education.

Economic development council recognizes Montgomery County for third consecutive year

The Montgomery County Economic Development Department has been recognized by the Southern Economic Development Council for the 3rd consecutive year. Through the 2012 Communication Awards competition, the Montgomery’s development department was given an Excellent Award for its community marketing brochure and a Superior Award for its commercial real estate website.

Save-a-Ton wins Innovation Award from National Association of Development Organizations

Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission’s Save-a-Ton campaign has been recognized with an award from the National Association of Development Organizations. The commission received a 2012 Innovation Award, recognizing the campaign’s efforts in energy conservation education and the effort to reduce duplication by local governments. Save-a-Ton uses a web site and social media to present information about local energy conservation programs and to connect people with energy-related businesses.

Carrier Enterprise is expanding

Carrier Enterprise is expanding its facility and its business. Branch Management Corp has begun expanding the facility to meet Carrier’s growing business. The building, located on Aerial Way Drive in Roanoke, will have an additional 10,000 square feet at the end of the renovation.

GI Jobs Magazine has named schools to its 2013 Military Friendly Schools list. Schools from the area that made it to the list include: Central Virginia Community College; Dabney S Lancaster Community College; Ferrum College; Jefferson College of Health Sciences; Liberty University; Lynchburg College; National College; Radford University; Roanoke College; Virginia Highlands Community College; Virginia Tech; Virginia Western Community College; Washington and Lee University; and Wytheville Community College.

Source4 relocates to larger facility

Source4 is moving from its location on Starkey Road  to a larger facility on Brandon Avenue in Roanoke. The new location is being renovated, and the company plans to move in October. Phone and fax numbers for Source4 will stay the same.

Virginia Tech awarded funding to integrate research ethics education into international STEM collaborations

The Council of Graduate Schools has awarded funding to Virginia Tech. The school was granted funds to combine research ethics education into international collaborations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

A grant of $398,000 from the National Science Foundation will be used prepare future scientists and engineers for ethical challenges they may encounter during global research.

Tech is one of five universities to receive funding from the council. Emory University, Northern Arizona University, University of Puerto Rico-Reo Piedras, the University of Oklahoma and Virginia Tech will work to develop  practice guidelines and  tools to measure the impact of the CGS project.

Engineering News Record editor to deliver Vecellio Lecture at Virginia Tech

A Virginia Tech Vecellio Distinguished Lecture will take place Oct. 5 in Torgersen Hall at 4 p.ml. Editor-in-chief of the Engineering News Record, Janice L. Tuchman will give the lecture “Five Critical issues and Five Good Ideas for the Next Ten Years of Construction.” This event is free and open the public.

Under Tuckman’s leadership, the Engineering News Record team won two prestigious Jesse H. Neal awards in March 2012. Advance Auto Parts awards $2 Million at inaugural charity Pro-Am

Advance Auto Parts and its vendor partners raised money for charities at its recent inaugural Pro-Am tournament. AAP and partners raised $2 million in funds donated to JDRF, the American Cancer Society, Boys & Girls Clubs of American and Building Homes for Heroes.

Each team was made up of celebrities from the PGA Tour and entertainment industry. Each team represented a charity and competed for a share of the $2 million in proceeds raised from the tournament. The American Cancer Society was awarded a first place prize of $650,000. The Boys and Girls Clubs and Building Homes tied and each received $475,000. JDRF placed fourth and received $400,000. Advance Auto Parts is headquartered in Roanoke.
