A school day and open hous has been planned for the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute on April 11. School day will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the open house will be from 4 to 7 p.m.

BLACKSBURG, Va., April 4, 2013 – The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s annual School Day (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and Open House (4 to 7 p.m.) events will be held on Thursday, April 11.
Participants at both events may tour the Smart Road and its fog and rain making equipment, a variable lighting test bed, and one of the tallest bridges in Virginia. The tour also includes the Smart Road control room, and presentations on the facilities and the interactive data acquisition system.
School Day and Open House offer the community an opportunity to learn about the research and technology utilized at the institute. This year’s events will include information for Distracted Driver Awareness Month and showcase technology developed from the Connected Vehicle Infrastructure University Transportation Center.
Four hundred students from grades three through 12 are expected to attend. Participating schools include Burton Center for Engineering, Blacksburg High School, Auburn Middle School, Christiansburg Elementary School, St. John Neumann Academy, Gilbert Linkous Elementary School and Pulaski Middle School.
Both events are collaborative efforts among Virginia Tech, Blacksburg Transit, and the Virginia Department of Transportation.
