LEXINGTON, VA. – July 3, 2013 – Columbia Gas of Virginia responded to Governor McDonnell’s call to feed the hungry in Virginia by participating in the Governor’s Bowl Food and Fund Drive, running from Memorial Day to Independence Day. Columbia Gas partnered with local chambers of commerce to collect 10,030 pounds of food which will be donated to Virginia food banks this summer.
Each of the seven Columbia Gas of Virginia locations finished with donations surpassing those collected in last year’s competition. Employees in the Lexington office collected 2,144 pounds which equals 153 pounds per employee – the most of any of the Columbia Gas of Virginia locations. Donations from the Lexington location will benefit the Rockbridge Area Relief Association.
“Summer is typically a slow season for donations, but it is also a time of year when area residents, especially children, need our help,” said Carl Levander, president. “Many children rely on school feeding programs, but when they are out of school for the summer, they may not have access to regular meals. The Governor’s Bowl Food and Fund Drive helps food banks meet this increased need.”
In last year’s competition, Columbia Gas of Virginia contributed nearly 1,000 pounds of food to local chambers of commerce competing in the annual event. Columbia Gas employees in the Staunton office helped the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce win the 2012 Governor’s Bowl benefitting the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. This year Columbia Gas of Virginia employees collected ten times as many pounds of food to give back to the communities they serve.
Winners of the 2013 Governor’s Bowl Food and Fund Drive will be announced by Governor Bob McDonnell later this summer.
