Building and Design of Virginia Inc. has been contracted to oversee the redevelopment of the Historic George Wythe Hotel in downtown Wytheville, developer and owner Smith Enterprises announced in a press release Wednesday. The renovation will create 30 guest rooms, an outdoor event venue and a restaurant, among other amenities.
The building was built in downtown Wytheville in 1927 and functioned as a hotel until 1970. It was then acquired by the Bank of Speedwell. It remained a bank until 2010, when it was last used by BB&T.
The press release from Smith Enterprises is below.
Smith Enterprises is pleased to announce they have selected Building and Design of Virginia, Inc. as General Contractor for the redevelopment of The Historic George Wythe Hotel in Downtown Wytheville, VA. “We are working toward a 12 month construction period” according to William J. “Bill” Smith, developer of the project. The property will feature 30 guest rooms, conference and meeting rooms, lounge, an outside event venue, and a full service restaurant with fresco dining and catering capabilities.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to help reshape Downtown Wytheville by converting this empty historic property into an economic anchor. We believe this project will create a great deal of attention that will draw both new businesses and consumers to our downtown….as it has been in the past and as it should be in the future”, said Smith. Built in 1927, it remained in operation as a hotel until 1970 when it was acquired by The Bank of Speedwell and remained a bank until 2010, the last being BB&T.
