Hi, folks! I’m Caitlin Saniga, an online editor and copy editor in the newsroom, and I’ll be curating the Times Square blog while veteran blog hostess Stephanie Ogilvie is out on maternity leave the next few months. What big shoes to fill!
But I’m no stranger to roanoke.com. Most recently, I’ve been the one posting stories to the site, tweeting from @roanoketimes and sharing on our Facebook page on weekday afternoons. You might recognize me from my brief appearance on Lindsey Nair’s Fridge Magnet blog in February, too.
Allow me to introduce myself.
Hometown: Wadsworth, Ohio — a suburb of Akron
College: Kent State University
Years in journalism: three at The Roanoke Times
Other newsrooms where I’ve worked: I spent two summers interning on The Columbus Dispatch’s features copy desk and one summer interning at Waste & Recycling News. I also worked as the copy desk chief of The Daily Kent Stater (my college newspaper) and as the editor of The Burr (my college magazine).
Favorite part of my job: I love playing the part of the reader. My job is to sort through countless emails, tweets, blog posts, stories, photos, calendar listings and more and hand-pick the gems. Then I do my best to polish them and nudge them into the spotlight of roanoke.com’s various platforms. My newest favorite online project is our Instagram account, where our photo staff is sharing lots of bonus photos that don’t appear anywhere else, which we’ll formally introduce in an upcoming Times Square post.
Favorite books: I just finished “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger on a recent trip, and I’ll never get tired of “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safron Foer.
Favorite phone apps: Instagram, AP Mobile, MapMyRun, Evernote, and Krispy Kreme’s Hot Light app (May the hot light’s red glow return to Roanoke soon.)
Interests outside of work: cooking; running with my dog, Sage; going on adventures in new places
Interesting fact about me: I’ve written more than 350 recipes for the cooking blog — So Hungry I Could Blog — that I share with my best friend from college.
