18th Century Reenactors

As a newspaper photojournalist I’ve covered my share of weekend festivals; so many that originality sometimes goes out the window.  Today I had the pleasure of covering an group of 18th century frontier reenactors.  Rather than take photos of kids learning to shooting bow or throw an ax and such, I chose to focus on the period dress of the participants and surroundings that made the image as close to an 18th century setting as possible.

Nick Kalenich, of Maryland, portrays an 18th century surgeon at the second annual Great Road encampment rendezvous in Elliston Sunday.

Lucy Smith, of Galax, portrays an 18th century frontier woman at the second annual Great Road encampment rendezvous in Elliston Sunday.

Samantha Newcomb, 9, left, and Lauren Meade, 8, of Christiansburg, portray an 18th century frontier girls at the second annual Great Road encampment rendezvous in Elliston Sunday.

Dorothy Myers, of Moneta, portrays an 18th century frontier woman and trader at the second annual Great Road encampment rendezvous in Elliston Sunday.

Matt Bitrick, of Elliston, portrays an 18th century eastern woodlands native american storyteller at the second annual Great Road encampment rendezvous in Elliston Sunday.

Mark Bradbury, of Roanoke, portrays an 18th century frontiersman at the second annual Great Road encampment rendezvous in Elliston Sunday.
