My name is Sam Owens, the summer photo intern at The Roanoke Times; technically my first name is Samantha, but it’s always felt a tad bit too formal for me even in the working world, so call me Sam. I am a native Virginian, born in Culpeper and raised in Chantilly. For the past three years, I have been attending Ohio University to study photojournalism and anthropology. I will be a senior next year, quickly finishing up my schooling and then I am hoping to join the ranks of professional photojournalists. I am happy to be back in Virginia, exploring a very beautiful part of it that I don’t know very much of.
To give you a little background information on my journalistic experiences: Last fall semester, I took some time off from school to be the photo intern at the Evansville Courier & Press in Evansville, Indiana. During my time at OU, I have worked as a staff photographer and picture editor for my college newspaper, The Post. I am also involved with the National Press Photographers Association OU chapter (NPPA) and will be serving as President of the chapter when I return to school in the fall.
I have always been one to listen first and speak second. With a naturally reserved personality, I observe all the facets of a situation before acting. I feel this has led to my uncanny interest in learning every little detail about a person, place or thing to which I make a connection. I am intrigued and engulfed by the multiple stories and layers of personality that each person conveys throughout their lifetime. My camera is a tool used simply to record the intimate moments of daily life, no matter how big or how small, with the hope of better understanding the lives that unfold around me. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to share so many slivers of other people’s lives on a daily basis.
If you see a very young looking girl, with a Roanoke Times press badge and some camera gear strapped around her, walking around Roanoke or the surrounding areas it’s probably me. Feel free to say hello. No need to be a stranger. I would love to meet as many people as I can during my short stay in Roanoke.
