The final tally on Wednesday-Thursday rainfall

Below (in extended entry; click “Read More” if you are looking at the full blog) is a listing of 24-hour rainfall amounts, through 11 a.m. reported to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg from the rain that moved through the area Wednesday into this morning.  The core of the heaviest rain was along and east of the Blue Ridge, especially along the U.S. 220 corridor from Martinsville to Roanoke and then north along I-55 to Rockbridge County, and points east. Rain amounts dropped off pretty fast going west — only .59 at the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, for instance, compared to 2.71 inches at Roanoke Regional Airport. All flash flood watches and warnings have expired for Southwest Virginia, and beyond a few scattered light showers this afternoon and evening primarily west of Roanoke, no more rain is expected until Sunday evening at the earliest.

And remember that much of the area got significant rainfall earlier this week, too — those amounts. for a 72-hour period ending Tuesday morning, can be found at the end of the blog entry linked here.

I’ve taken the liberty to edit the weather service on one thing — moving Roanoke AP (ASOS), which is Roanoke Regional Airport, from Roanoke County where it is usually listed to the City of Roanoke, where it is located.

  2. Brian |

Totals from our house in Goodview:
First storm 3.55 inches (1.50 Sun, 1.91 Mon and .14 Tue)
Second storm 3.84 inches (.36 Wed and 3.48 Thu)
    Combined 7.39 inches

  3. Nick |

I’m very pleased with this rain we got here in the Elett Valley at my house: 1.41 inches bringing the total from Saturday to just around 4 inches. And now we get the coolness which will be great! Kevin, there appears to be rain around Monday. What are your thoughts on this? The Wilmington, NC story is quite amazing and the same with Henry County and all of eastern VA and central VA. The rain here should at least have put a serious dent in the drought or, like for one commenter on here, should have made it vanish for the meantime.

  4. Kevin Myatt |

It should be noted that it is STILL raining in the eastern half of Virginia south into the Outer Banks.

    http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/northeast.php

Right now I’m not real big on rain chances early next week. I think the biggest effect of the next upper-low will be some gray, chilly days with temperatures hovering in the 40s and 50s.

  5. Doug Griggs |

I had almost exactly the same overall totals as Steve Murray (20th comment on the previous thread, a little after 4 PM today). I had 4.2 from the Sunday-Monday storm, and 3.2 from this puppy. Emptied the rain gauge at 6:20 this morning with 2.1 inches in it, and got another 1.1 in just a few hours (perhaps only 2 or 3) this morning. The CPC Drought Monitor was released today, but supposedly was effective as of Tuesday morning. Still showed SW Virginia as abnormally dry. HUH?? We had 2-4 inches of rain by Monday night. I think their drought monitor needed Exlax, at least for the Roanoke Valley. It’s a moot point anyway, because except for poor Rick in Wytheville and possibly Pulaski, the I-81 corridor within 60 miles of Roanoke should be out of the drought by next week’s update.

  6. Doug Griggs |

What a crazy month September was. First 3+ weeks were very warm mostly, with less than a 1/4 inch of rain at my house, then the last 5 days were incredibly wet with high temps at or below normal. All this water practically guarantees that the reservoirs will be in good shape all winter, unless we turn incredibly dry … leaves will be on the trees for roughly another month only (and that is here in Roanoke). Rick, your prediction of a 6-month drought took a big hit, at least for places east of Route 8. I just had two months worth of rain. Amazing how quickly and drastically weather trends can change. What do you think, Kevin, is there a good chance that October will revert to a very dry month?

  7. Doug Griggs |

And Other John, thank you very much for your comment at 8:25 this morning, giving the hard-to-believe rainfall totals from Wilmington, NC. I was going to research that, but you saved me the effort. Please give the rainfall total from today’s rain in Wilmington, too, when you get a chance. Meanwhile, I looked up the updated CPC outlooks for both October and the 3-month October-December periods a few minutes ago. All of Virginia is in the white area for all four maps, meaning equal chances of being wet or dry, or warm or cold.

  8. Michael Hoback |

This rain totally missed Washington Co. We had a few sprinkles overnight and drizzle off and on today. No appreciable accumulation. We are in fairly good shape right now. Glad our friends to the east are doing better now. Weather man is saying cold, windy and showers on Sunday and Monday with a cut off low over TN. Nice that the 90′s are history for now.

  9. Kevin Myatt |

I don’t see October being a very dry month, but I would lean toward it being drier than normal. I think the cooler weather pattern that’s settling in next week won’t break very easily. Cooler patterns with intrusions of air from Canada are usually drier patterns, but not usually complete droughts. Best guess: A month with about 1.5 inches of rain and 1-2 degrees below normal. All subject to go right out the window with a significant tropical system or a second-half-of-the-month warming trend just beyond the line of sight.

  10. Rick |

Kevin: Could we hear about snow flurries in the higher elevations on Monday?

  11. Kevin Myatt |

RICK, DID YOU JUST UTTER THE “S” WORD?!!!! :)

We have an upper-level low that will be spinning in place somewhere near or just west of us early next week. Upper-level lows are deep pools of cold air aloft. Surface temperatures will be below normal and could hang around in the 40s-50s even at lower elevations in the Sunday-Tuesday timeframe if there are clouds and showers. It is conceivable that, especially in early mornings before the sun can warm the boundary layer, that the atmosphere could be chilled just enough from aloft to surface for a few snowflakes to make it to the surface in the higher elevations — and in this case, I’m thinking probably no lower than 4,000 feet unless this upper low is a lot more vigorous than we think it is. So we’re talking the Great Smokies, Mount Rogers, Snowshoe, places like that.

  12. Other John |

S-word discussion notwithstanding, we got more rain in the overnight…somewhere around 2 tenths of an inch. Our storm total was 0.87″, 3.34″ for the combined total from the two storms. Not too shabby.

And for Doug…WIlmington recorded an additional 2.29″ of rain for the 30th…bringing their montly total to an astonishing 22.72″…and remember they got all of that in a 5-day span!

To put that in perspective, that’s only 4″ less than what I had recorded at our house though the ENTIRE YEAR, before these latest storms…

    Yikes!

My wife and I wanted to take a vacation down there this year for our anniversary, we may need to invest in hip-waders and a trolling motor to get around!
