Thanks for a correct number of outages, Pistol Pete. I must have been snow-blind when I misread the columns! I saw forecasts of strong wind gusts for today that didn't materialize. That would have made for worse power problems, but I saw hardly any wind at all.

About 10:30 PM, after I had come back in from shoveling and measuring, I heard a loud BOOM toward the east, and this one sounded much more like a transformer popping than the brief pop (or "PING!") that I heard in late afternoon that I think was a snow thunderclap. We are fortunate .... still have power. In some thunderstorms, we are often one of the unlucky neighborhoods that gets a power outage.

At my "official" measuring spot I have 5 in. here at outpost 1000 ft. However some parts of my yard that are in the shade have right at 6 in.
Power just came back on ..at one point over 50,000 people out in SWVA. I was sleigh riding with some friends and our kids and I saw a large green flash in the sky. My friend said that looked like a transformer explosion toward your house (2 miles away). He said, call you phone and see if your answering machine works, it didnt. I thought aliens had landed or someone had fireworks. It lit up half the sky.

Im guessing 6 or so in Giles..dont think we got as cold as everyone else. barely hovered around 32-33 degrees.

Well, the storm shriveled up in eastern KY, NE Tenn. and even counties (Lee County, for one) in far, far SW corner of Virginia, but it continues here. Bands moving in from the NW. Enough! Stop! We snow haters already put up the white flag hours ago!! LOL I just realized that except for the 3 big snowfalls of the 2009-10 winter, today's event is the largest snowfall since I moved to Roanoke. Here at my house, that is.

I spoke with Bob and Lisa Macintosh of Lee, Mass. early this evening. Want to hear something wild? I have now received more snow than they have received since Halloween!! They are stuck at about 4 inches from Halloween through today. And two winters ago Roanoke received more snow than Boston. So that makes two of the last 3 winters that I received more snow than a New England location, and I think it is the only two times since we moved here late in 1997
