Nothing much has changed in the outlook today. The likely colder pattern isn't any later than it was. The potential for snow the rest of the winter does not ride on getting the "big chill" -- in fact, a 1985-style deep Arctic outbreak with dry air and suppressed storm systems might be worse for snow in our neck of the woods than just getting something a little more typical with an active storm track just to the south. Having the Arctic air available to be pulled into storms rather than totally overtaking the pattern seems to work better for snow around here. 2009-10 was consistently below-normal but not extremely cold often in Virginia.

12Z Euro was very tantalizing for a winter storm-devleoping pattern at Day 10. Sorta looked like what Larry Cosgrove was talking about a day or two ago.

I will probably be eating my words about the big chill happening on January 21st. I can then pass the butter and salt and/or sweeteners to a few other folks here about giving up on snow this winter (imo).

Scott, your 7:05 comment broke me up! I loved it. Gosh, I wish I could tell a certain joke now {it is not personal, SS! :>)}, but unfortunately it has an ethnic overtone to it. I know .... "Did you hear about the young, spoiled debutante who always wanted to travel? She loved the finest things in life, fancy jewelry, cars. She had a favorite wine, too .... "I want to go to Miami Beach!! I want to go now!'" (favorite "Whine").

Wow, NWS-Blacksburg is even in on the Sudden Stratospheric Warming discussion now:

NEARING THE END OF THE MONTH...A SUDDEN STRATOSPHERIC WARMING EVENT IS LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKELY TO SPLIT THE POLAR VORTEX. THIS INTERESTING FEATURE DOESNT ALWAYS SEND PART OF THE SPLIT POLAR VORTEX ONTO OUR SIDE OF THE HEMISPHERE...HOWEVER NEAR DAY 10 SOME OF THE OPERATIONAL AND ENSEMBLE GUIDANCE IS INDEED SHOWING THIS OUTCOME. IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO HAVE SOME TYPE OF BLOCKING OVER GREENLAND/WEST BASED -NAO TO FORCE THE HEART OF THE ARCTIC AIR INTO THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC...ELSE IT WILL SLIDE INTO NEW ENGLAND. IF PROPER BLOCKING DOES SET UP WITH THE SSW SOME OF THE COLDEST AIR IN SEVERAL YEARS COULD ARRIVE INTO OUR AREA LATE JAN/EARLY FEB.

Was 28* here this AM and a heavy frost. About the same all the way into CS. Take those bank and sign temps with a grain of salt. I have a highly accurate indoor/outdoor gauge mounted on my truck. It is accurate, but seldom agrees with the signs. Too many varibles involved, like where is the temp sensor, is it located on a heat trap. Not to be trusted in a near freezing situation involving possible black ice for sure.

I did not know Mr. Racy, Doug, but Channel 13 meteorologist Sean Sublette was a college classmate of his at Penn State. He relayed over Twitter to me that his fight against cancer was even longer and tougher than the article suggests.

The article hit me because (1) he was born in the same year I was, so he's very close to my age and (2) his role in the early stages of the derecho being the last watch he issued working for SPC.
