Under the weather, taking a rest on a mild day

I’m planning to take the next 36 hours — through Thursday morning — off the blog to let a bit of a medical issue heal up by taking some rest from all work. Wednesday will be a good day for some rest — calm weather, highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s. Rain will be headed into our area for late Thursday — maybe mixed with sleet on the front end — with a system that may ultimately spawn what could be a major winter storm in New England. Will plan to be back to discuss all that on Thursday morning.

If you comment, it may be some time before it gets posted. I won’t be on here much at all until late Wednesday or early Thursday.

I think we’ve got some active weather ahead, so catch your breath and get ready.

KM, sending prayer your way for rest and recovery.

Kevin, I sure do hope that you don’t have the flu. This season’s flu bug is one of the strongest during the last 20 years, I have read. I/(let’s face it) all of us hope that you recover soon.
Matt, I doubt that it was snowing quite that strongly where I was back in 1983, and I don’t remember having an issue seeing. Some folks I saw who hadn’t thoroughly cleaned their windshields before setting out had problems, however. I don’t care how quickly the snow is coming down and how urgently people want to get somewhere during a heavy snowstorm, they need to get their wipers as clean as possible and the windshield clean and warm as possible and warmed up (via full blast defroster once the engine is even a little warm) ASAP, or they may become a statistic.
More snow driving stuff: I remember how great it was when the rear window defogger (and de-icer) was invented. Don’t remember exactly when it happened, but I am sure that it was after 1960, and probably quite a few years later than that.

I have told everybody to forget all other weather reports and forecasters and just read your column and blog. Thanks for all the weather work you do and hope you feel better soon.

40* here, little wind. Another mild A.M. Love it! So far February is starting off more like November did (cooler than normal), unlike DEC and JAN. That is already changing, however.

Gonna be some serious flooding in the SE next week, and I just hope they control the dams better on the New River this time.

Don’t know when you will read this Kevin but take care and get better. We cannot do without you. Your column and blog have added much to the Roanoke Times and we apprciate all you do.

Kevin, hope you are resting and feeling better! Can’t have our favorite self described weather geek “under the weather” on us! Rest up and we can be hopeful for some active weather over the next week :)

  9. Other John |

Hope you get the rest and recovery you need, sometimes taking a day or 2 helps more than anything.

  10. nancy |

    Feel better, Kevin!

  11. crooked road |

Best of wishes, Kevin. Your dedication to this blog is admirable. Hope you rest and heal at hurricane levels! Thanks for what you do…

  12. Shanon "Nurse Snow" |

Oh, and what is this that WDBJ7 has posted? It is showing snow and then freezing rain for Thursday into Friday. This doesn’t hurt my feelings or anything LOL.

  13. Other John |

I know this won’t appear for a while, but the 12Z NAM model plops out 73″ of snow on Boston…no way it happens (most likely), but that is kida eye-popping.

  14. Meg |

Kevin, hope you feel all better soon, thanks for all you do! Even though I’m a TWLS, I have to say I’m enjoying today’s weather!

  15. Shanon "Nurse Snow" |

So, the new Winter Storm that is going to be hitting New England has been named “Nemo”. This makes me giggle LOL The only thing I can think of is the Disney movie with the same moniker. I can’t believe TWC is doing this! SMH

How dare you to have the gaul to get sickly rat durin da dead of winter. You need to wait til late spring or early summer fer the sniffles. Now, iffen you needs a good soup recipe, call DC or me. An apple a day works wonders I hear, so call some of our farmers on the board. If you need a sawbones, call our resident clark docvet. Take care of yourself KM.

Kevin – Thanks for tireless efforts with this blog. This is my source of keeping up with the weather.

Our daughter in Boston forwarded this from her local NWS.
***WINTER STORM WATCH EXPANDED TO COVER THE ENTIRE REGION FRIDAY
INTO SATURDAY MORNING WITH PERHAPS A PERIOD OF BLIZZARD CONDITIONS
ALONG THE COASTAL PLAIN FOR A TIME FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY
    MORNING***

A QUICK UPDATE WAS SENT OUT TO EXPAND A WINTER STORM WATCH TO COVER
THE ENTIRE REGION. CONFIDENCE CONTINUES TO GROW IN A FOOT OR MORE
OF SNOW AFFECTING A LARGE PORTION OF THE REGION. WE HAVE BROUGHT UP
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WITH THE LATEST FORECAST…BUT IT MAY NOT EVEN BE
ENOUGH IN SOME LOCALES. BIGGEST UNCERTAINTY IS NEAR THE SOUTH COAST
AND HOW FAR NORTH A TEMPORARY TRANSITION TO RAIN MAKES IT FRIDAY
AFTERNOON. HOWEVER…EVEN ON THE CAPE AND ISLANDS AREAS THAT CHANGE
TO RAIN MAY GET HIT HARD BY THE COLD CONVEYER BELT. NEAR BLIZZARD
CONDITIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE FRIDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SATURDAY ACROSS
PORTIONS OF THE COASTAL PLAIN…AND TRAVEL MAY BECOME NEARLY
IMPOSSIBLE. WILL HAVE MUCH MORE LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

Kevin I hope that you are feeling better! Thank you again for all you do. You have so many dedicated blog visitors – many that comment daily- and so many like me that do not…but that doesn’t mean I don’t get on here 30 times a day and read updates and comments :) Slightly addicted!

Hey,Kevin,if you barked or mooed I would be happy to help ya feel better!! Enjoy some R and R time and hope you feel better soon!

  21. snocat |

Kevin, feel better. I have a feeling this winter is far from done with us.

  22. wdbrand |

Yall better believe I got a bunch of the outside chores done today. Hard not to at low 50′s after the weather the last week or so. Now let it come on down. Give me a shout Kevin and I’ll have a big bowl of soup there in a couple of hours.

  23. Kevin Myatt |

Well, the cold air wedge is gonna make it complicated tomorrow night. Figured as much taking a day off. I’ll be back on late tonight with a new post.

Just to end any speculation on my malady — I have a case of shingles. Thought I pulled a muscle or a tendon in my left arm shoveling snow a couple weeks back, but the burning pain kept going and later became accompanied by a rash. Taking a day off to let the medicine take hold and ease things a bit. I’m not in excruciating pain, but it has felt like I have a needle stuck in my arm pretty much constantly.

Warn you friends and relatives up near Boston that they got a big’un coming Friday-Saturday.

  24. Doug G, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft |

clarkie, you really made me LOL for quite a few seconds with your “if you barked or mooed …. ” comment!! VERY FUNNY! Kevin is feeling some of the love that this blog can generate, which really came through for this CBOLC (Crazy Bearded Ol’ Letter Carrier) back on January 5th and 6th. I had the shingles myself about a year ago, but I was much luckier than KM …. my case was milder.
I have two sisters and a nephew who all live in Massachusetts, plus three life-long friends live in New England (2 of them in MASS also). I hope that this snowstorm does not rival the blizzard of ’78, but it could rival the 21-incher that fell 17 days earlier on 1-20-78. By “rival” I am addressing all the impacts of the FEB 78 blizzard. For instance, Revere, MASS was inundated with almost freezing salt water while the blizzard was going on.

  25. Doug G, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft |

Hey, maybe I can get in touch with all of those Massachusetts relatives and life-long friends tonight or tomorrow and then post their snow totals here in one comment on Sunday. Trouble is, I don’t want to cause too much envy among the truly hard-core snow lovers here, who love gobs and gobs of snow ….. lol

Brittney, thanks for ‘jumping into the water’ and wishing Kevin well. Despite the fact that once in a long while things can get a bit testy here, most folks are very nice and welcome newcomers. And “Shingles Man” NEVER lets things get out of control here. Which is probably one of the big reasons why so many bloggers cherish him. I hope that you come back, tell us in general terms where you live, and tell us what is happening in your neck of the woods.

  26. wdbrand |

    Soup won’t help them things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  27. Doug G, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft |

Omigosh. Here is the link to the 48-hour (SAturday-Sunday) snowfall forecast for at least a foot. Both of my sisters, my nephew, and one of my lifelong friends are all within the light blue 70% chance area. The other two friends are in the 60% area. http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/pwpf/wwd_accum_probs.php?fpd=48&ptype=snow

  28. Doug G, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft |

Somehow it linked (I guess to the default setting) of 2 inches. Just go the upper right section of the page and change the snowfall amount. When I clicked on 18 inches, most of eastern Mass. is still in the 50% area. There is even a 30% chance that the eastern 1/3rd of MASS gets 24 inches+!! And a 10 to 20% chance that the total goes over 30 inches in and around Boston itself.

  29. Doppler Carol (Floyd County Doppler 2546 ft) |

Kevin, so sorry to hear about your malady. I hear shingles can be pretty bad. Rest! Take it easy!

Went down to Roanoke today via Bent Mt. today so I sent positive thoughts your way. Hope you feel better real soon.

  30. Mike from Marshall |

Kevin hope you get well soon!Everybody loves this blog and really care`s about you alot. You do a great service to all of us weather watchers, from the Northern part of the state to the Southwestern tip to the Tidewater.Low this morning was 26.High today was 45,now down to 32.5.

  31. Doug G, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft |

More on MASS (please skip this comment if not interested). I just spoke with my brother-in-law in Ipswich, 25 miles NE of Boss-town. He said that today was nice and sunny. What was “nice?” High of 30*. I laughed and laughed. “Hey, Mal, wanna guess what the high was here in Roanoke?” “Did it get to 45?” “Try about 54*, Malzie.” Going down to 12* tonight there, highs of 19 for tomorrow, 31 in the big snow on Friday, then only 23 on Saturday. Big winds during the heart of the storm, too; 24 to 29 mph Friday evening, gusting to 36-41 after midnight. Gusts could go up to 55. (all this from the NWS, BTW).
Why I was ecstatic when I was able to leave New England in January 1980. They can have it. Some of you super-avid snow lovers might want to check your computer screens for drool. JUST KIDDING!!

  32. Angela |

Like others have said…I know you are taking a break and won’t be getting to the comments as quickly as usual. I’ve prayed for you and am confident that you’ll be back up and feeling much better very soon. You get plenty of rest Mr. Myatt!

  33. Doug G, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft |

CPC 6-10 day outlook has changed radically, just since Monday. Take a look now. No more warmer than normal for SW Virginia, with the pale blue getting close to us into the eastern half of Kentucky.
    http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/610day/index.php
It still shows us with a 40% chance of being wet.

  34. Tina B in Eastern Montgomery Co - 1500' |

Oh Kevin, I hope that the medication you are taking works! And I’m jealous for Boston peeps!! What do we get? Rain, freezing rain, sleet. Bah humbug!

  35. Doug G, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft |

8-14 day starts with Valentine’s Day, runs until the 20th. 40% chance of being colder than normal, with still an either 33% chance (west of Roanoke) or 40% chance of being wet/snowy. http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/814day/index.php Very promising outlook for the white stuff.

  36. Doug G, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft |

Just looked up the TWC hourly forecast for Roanoke city for tomorrow and very early Friday. Somewhat weird. Chances of precip go up to 30% for showers (temps will be about 40, they claim) between 3-5 PM. Then %ages drop back to 10-0-10 for the next 3 hours? Huh? Dry slot? Then back to 30% and stays at that %age from 9PM right through 2 AM. But the precip type changes from “few showers” through 11 PM to freezing drizzle midn. to 2:00. Then comes the stuff that everyone here despises (except for “ice storm lover?”), light freezing rain from 3 AM through 8 AM. Chance of precip is highest during those pre-dawn and dawn hours. Up to 60% by 5 and 6 AM.
I am very glad that the roads in this area still have some of that gritty stuff on them from the clippers. They should help keep the roads passable ….. assuming that the evening rains don’t wash them away.
I just got the car washed after work today. So that most of it will look great in the body shop after I slide off the road Friday morning.
