Weather Journal

with Kevin Myatt

Does anyone have any weather questions?

Now that we're in for what looks to be a prolonged period of temperatures near normal (slowly warming above normal, but probably not for a week) and, unfortunately, VERY dry weather, with no new tropical systems in sight, this would be a good time to take a breather and ask you a question.

Do you have a weather question you would like to have answered in a future Weather Journal column?

I'll steal a cue from Tom Angleberger, our What's On Your Mind guy, and open the floor to weather questions. Either leave a comment below or e-mail me. Please let me know your name and where you're from.

It may be a few weeks before I get the column out with the answers to some or all of your questions (depending on how many I get), but, unless I'm buried beyond belief, I'll try my best to get everyone an answer.

Kevin,

When was the worst ice storm in Roanoke's recorded history and how did it come to fruition? What kind of damage did it cause?

Why is the Roanoke Valley windier in the winter than the summer, and does the Urban Heat Effect still apply when the winds are so heavy?

I'm still puzzling over the temp/wind variations from winter to summer. Seems like in the summer, the winds kick up as the sun sets - and vice versa in the winter.

Thanks,

PVC

Kevin, What is the differences between Fair (Fair Skies), Partly Cloudy, and Partly Sunny when a meteorologist and TV weatherman give their forecast? (They seem mostly identical).

What kind of things should a person look for in a weather forecast to try predict a stellar sunrise/sunset or a fog cloaked valley. This sort of knowledge can be handy when planning an early bird or late night hike to MacAfee's Knob or the Roanoke Star to take some photos.

If asked by a stranger to the area to describe the region's climate, what would your four or five sentences be?

Kevin,
Joe Bastardi is calling for a cold December for the much of the country in contrast to the NWS which appears to be calling for a mild winter across the board. What's your take?

Why is western franklin county so very windy in the winter and spring? In Callaway, we seem to be more blustery than even right down in Boones Mill.

Thanks everyone for your weather questions, and I am working toward answering them, some of which I will do in my print column. I intend to answer all of them in some way, even if just by email, but it might take me a little while. Very good questions.
