Weather Journal will be a politics-free zonePosted Sep15, 2008 at 03:43 PMI've decided to make Weather Journal an entirely politics-free zone. In other words, I'm not accepting any comments that endorse or criticize political parties or candidates in any way. I've taken down my own previous entry in which I wrote about how the rise in gas prices will eventually pass as power and transportation are restored. It wasn't really a political entry on my part, but it led to multiple comments about various policies and politicians. This is a very heated election season, and I fully recognize how important politics is. But Weather Journal is about weather, and only about weather. There are plenty of places to give political opinions, including the Roanoke Times' Round Table blog. We'll keep this blog free of politics and stick to weather. One final note: It is possible that the advertising bar at the top of the blog page may show a paid political ad from time to time, but that is entirely out of my control. Weather Journal itself does not endorse any political party, candidate or viewpoint. |

Kevin MyattWhile I plan to keep the blog free of politics, I would like to write a column later about the wide variety of climates represented by the 4 candidates for president and vice president. Between their birthplaces and where they currently reside/represent, it's definitely the widest variety of climate zones ever represented in a U.S. presidential election -- tropics (Obama born in Hawaii, McCain in Panama canal zone), tundra (Palin in Alaska), West Coast (Palin working out of Juneau), desert (McCain in Arizona) Rockies (Palin born in Idaho), Upper Midwest/Great Lakes region (Obama residing in Chicago area), Appalachians (Biden born in Scranton, Pa.) and East Coast (Biden in Delaware). Really, only the South and Plains seem to be missing.

Other JohnKevin, you can get coverage of the great plains and south with Bob Barr, the Libertarian. He was born in Iowa and was a representative in Georgia for many years, and still resides there I believe. So with that, the country is pretty well covered geographically, even if Barr stands about as much chance as a snowball from Palin's Alaska sitting in Obama's Hawaii or McCain's Arizona. But that is pretty interesting, I had not really thought much of the race in terms of geography. And like the other people...definitely a good move. Sometimes it seems weather & climate issues get awfully political, but you've done a great job of keeping things weather-focused. Thanks for that!

Kevin MyattThanks everyone for your support of Weather Journal and the no-politics pledge (talking about where candidates live and what climate they have doesn't really count)
