Heat returning

In today's Weather Journal column in The Roanoke Times, I alluded to the eastward expansion of the heat wave that was in the central U.S., and then got relocated to the west. Well, today, the Climate Prediction Center is showing the same thing on its Hazards Assessment map. The CPC map depicts an expected eastward expansion in the area of extreme heat through Aug. 3. And just to make sure to show that we're included, I also included a close-up version focusing on the area over Virginia, showing us in the red circle. I might be totally wrong, but I think that August 2006 will end up having some of the hottest temperatures we've had in years.

The big dome of hot, dry air over the central U.S. keeps coming back, and I think it will expand over the eastern states next time around. Again, this is weather, and this is speculation, so all I can say is "We'll see."

In the short term this week, expect warm to hot, sticky conditions with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Weather in July and August usually comes in two varieties ... hot and humid, very hot and dry ... and it looks like we'll take turns tasting those flavors the next several days, and likely, the next few weeks.
