Threat of severe thunderstorms is increasing this afternoon

The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted a large area of southern Virginia and northern North Carolina, including the Roanoke and New River valleys (on the northern edge), for a heightened risk of severe weather this afternoon. In addition to rich moisture and some instability with slight warming after morning rains, there is strong enough winds aloft switching in direction that there is some risk of supercell thunderstorms and a small risk of an isolated tornado. Hail and high winds will be the primary threats, however.

National Weather Service-Blacksburg radar has been showing clusters of storms developing in far southwest Virginia and also in northwest North Carolina. The cluster west of Wytheville extending up toward Bluefield may affect the New River and Roanoke valleys later today.

And just as I've been typing this ... a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued to our southeast. That region will have a higher risk of severe weather, largely because of increased daytime heating, but don't be surprised to see a gusty storm or two closer to us.
