Next week's hot weather topic

TSChris0802.jpg

The heat is the weather obsession this week, but there could be an entirely new obsession this time next week. Though Tropical Storm Chris has fluctuated in strength and organization today, it's still threatening to strengthen northeast of Puerto Rico. If the early forecast tracks are correct, Chris will go waltzing right into the warm waters of the open Gulf of Mexico early next week ... and then we would be right back where we were last year with Cindy, Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita and Wilma ... watching and wondering how strong it will get and where it will go. Follow the latest on Chris on the National Hurricane Center Web site.

By the way ... Roanoke's official high for today as of 5 p.m. is 97, one degree short of a record ... but the 6 p.m. official temperature was 97, making me wonder if the temperature might have poked up another degree sometime between 5 and 6, like it did Monday. I'll let you know if I find out, but for now, today's high was 97.
