Mike Hutchinson with an interesting rack, and a repair question

Mike Hutchinson shot this buck on Nov. 19. Check out that cool character on the right side! Kind of a hybrid between an awesome brow tine and a double main beam.

As can be seen in the second photo, the rack was damaged. Hutchinson wondered if it was hit by a car, or maybe even shot. I also can’t help wondering if maybe the rack was broken in a fight.

Anyway, Hutchinson is seeking advice on how to best repair the crack on the main beam. I told him I’d probably use epoxy or Gorilla glue. But I’m no expert.

Any other advice out there?

Well that’s an odd looking fracture. Im not so sure that it was shot or hit by a car. Not knowing the events as they unfolded it almost appears that the buck may have smacked that on a rock in it’s fall after the shot. Looks pretty fresh. At any rate I would try a dab of the gorilla glue in the actual crack and as far as the whiteish colored part I wouldn’t try to patch or fill it rather use a wood stain to blend it to look more of the color of the undamaged portion.

I say if it is strong enough to stay together, which obviously it was, let it be. I wouldn’t change any color either, that is what makes it unique. If it was good enough when it was alive it is good enough now. Just my opinion. Enjoy it for what it is. Congrats.

Thanks for the advice. The antler above the crack was very flimsy & close to breaking off. I ended up filling the crack with clear 2-part epoxy. You can still see the crack, but it’s a lot more solid now, so I’m happy with the repair. I didn’t do anything to the chip in the antler, but it turned brown on it’s own within a day or two.
