The two different shots I have seen so far are vintage Internet rumor shots. You know what I mean. The critter is obviously an elk, but the pictures are just fuzzy enough that they could have come from, well, just about anywhere.
Well, they came from Bland County.
I just got off the phone with Tommy Dunn, who owns The Square store in Bland. That’s where the elk was checked. DGIF biologist Allen Boynton also confirmed the kill.
I still haven’t talked to the hunter, but that’s next. So stay tuned…
UPDATE 3 p.m. I just spoke with Lonnie Keene, the hunter who killed the bull. The first thing he said when I told him who I was was, “Man, word got out fast about this.”
This kill wasn’t a complete accident. Keene had actually seen the bull a couple of times prior to reopening of muzzleloader season . He went out Saturday morning specifically to find the elk. He said he has been wanting to hunt elk in Colorado for 35 years but hasn’t been able to make it.
