A good day on the water with lots of laughs

I spent a good day on Smith Mountain Lake yesterday during a fishing excursion organized as part of a Freedom Alliance Hero’s Retreat event in the area. The Smith Mountain Striper Club hosted the anglers.

The special guest aboard guide Kathy Franceschini’s boat was Army Spc. Joe Yantz, who lost a leg two years ago in Afghanistan. Also aboard was writer/actor Erik Stolhanske, whose credits include cult comedy classics including Super Troopers and Beerfest. I love movies like that, but somehow have not watched either of these. Having met Stolhanske, now I will make it a priority.

You’d think that a guy who makes comedy movies would be cutting up all the time, but Stolhanske was actually pretty subdued. Yantz and Franceschini were, on the other hand, wide open and hilarious.

I’ve been hearing good things about Franceschini for ages but hadn’t met her. She was a hoot and I hope to get back on the water with her again.

Very often the people whose public persona is comical are the ones who are the most subdued in person. I had a friend who spent about two hours in the ‘private’ presence of Eddie Murphy. He said he was one of the most quiet, respectful, thoughtful people he’d ever seen. Very laid back, very under the current. Pretty much 180 degrees from the public’s perception of him.
