My final sunfish post (for a while)

OK. After I post this, I am off my sunfish kick. At least as far as posting here.

I’ll keep fishing for them. In fact, I’ll be fishing for them again tomorrow evening. But instead of targeting bigger fish I’ll be hoping to catch some little ones to use for catfish bait.

Anyway, here’s my column from today’s Roanoke Times, in which I wax reminiscent about some of my fun sunfish memories.

Actually, one of the stories, about how my brother and I got stuck cleaning about 100 bluegills, is a fun memory of an experience that was anything but fun.

But who among us hasn’t come home after a great fishing day with a few more fish to clean than expected?

They are the perfect fish to learn fly rodding. They are more forgiving about presentation and actually prefer a “Plop” to a “Drip.” I’ll second your mention of using a 6wt, because if you catch enough Sunfish, you’re gonna have a bass or pike chomp one.
