Great buck caught on trailcam!

It’s that time when we start putting our trailcams out to get an idea what is roaming around our hunting grounds.

The guy who sent me this shot put it right in the subject line: “Brotha!”

We all know that racks in velvet can be deceiving. I don’t think there is any question that this is a great deer. It almost looks like it’s just a seven-pointer. But, man, is it wide.

For me, the July 4 holiday always seems to be that point where I start really looking toward deer season. Deer are visible, for one thing, and are easy to see feeding in the open in the evenings. We’re putting our trailcams up. We’re working on stand locations. We’re also making sure our hunting spots are lined up. Of course, most of us bowhunters are also starting our more serious shooting.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of your trailcam shots. Send them away and I’ll post them all.

The Body on this particular deer says he is fairly mature. You are right in that velvet bucks can be extremely deceiving. I like to compare the thickness of the velvet wrapped antler with the width of the ear, or the nose per se’. This helps you get an idea that once the velvet is shed, how thick will the antler be. My guess to spark some fun debate is that this buck is a 3 1/2 yr old and once stripped, would make a fine buck in anybodys book. Remember, its not the antlers that make the trophy, but rather the game plan and execution of your strategy that make the best memories!

That is a big deer and a nice wide rack! He appears to be praying for hunting season!
