Cory Toms drops a big bear with his crossbow

Troy Toms sent in this super shot of his 17-year-old son, Cory, with Cory’s big black bear. Here’s what Troy had to write about the hunt, which took place on Oct. 10 on private land in Bedford County:

“He made a perfect double lung shot and the bear only went 20 yards. After the shot Cory went back to the truck and blew the horn so I thought maybe he had shot a decent buck because he will usually wait on me to come out at dark on anything else.

When I arrived back at the truck Cory started telling me he shot a bear and it was a ‘Big One.’  I knew he probably had a decent one because he shot one with his compound bow 2 years ago from the same stand that was 105lbs. (And I happened to be sitting in another tree 10 yards away watching it all. Don’t know why but I had decided to just sit with him that day.)

The look on his face said it all. I asked if he had tracked yet or heard the death moan and he said no to both. He commented that there was no way he was going to track it by himself as big as it was. He even came out the long way around because the bear had run toward the truck after the shot. I started laughing.

We drove over to the area and when I asked him where he was when he shot he said, ‘Right over there.’

We had only taken about 5 steps when I saw the bear laying behind a mound of dirt. The bear weighed in at 226 pounds so I can imagine the look on his face when he saw it.

As icing on the cake he also took a doe on Saturday morning so he has had a great start to the season so far.”

Congrats to Cory on his great season so far!

I think it’s safe to say regardless of the animal taken, the “hero shot” or photo is one of the best I’ve seen on here.
