URGENT: Who can ID person with 8-point buck in VW trunk?

Roanoke Times photographer just posted this shot, which he took this morning on Yellow Mountain Road in Roanoke’s Garden City neighborhood, on his Facebook page.

We all know how big hunting — and deer hunting in particular — is in Southwest Virginia. And I constantly remind people that our region’s hunters come from all walks of life. We’re not just country folk driving around in big 4×4 trucks.

This appears to be a perfect example. Here we have a great eight-point buck — in the trunk of a VW Cabriolet convertible. There’s even that great “Guitars Not Bombs” sticker.

It doesn’t get much better than this folks.

Now, I suppose this could have been a road kill. But a VW Cabriolet? Not exactly the demographic of someone who would be picking up roadkill. Then again…

Anyway, I must know more about this. And you, readers of the Wild Life blog, are the key.

If you don’t know who this is, someone you know does. Share this picture. Post on your Facebook page. Email to friends. I am counting on you. I want to know who is driving this car by the end of the day.

That is all. Let your mission begin.

Sure looks like a bow and arrow in the trunk behind the deer.

Big buck, looks like left leg front broken. At least if a car victim it won’t be wasted.

Sven — I was thinking the same thing. I zoomed in on the full-size image and it was unclear.

Upon further review of the closeup I can see an old Easton aluminum arrow, broken, up by the deer’s neck.

Also, the sticker next to the GUITARS NOT BOMBS sticker is for the North American Hunting Club, and the decal with the wings has the words “Bad Ass.” The decals are on the underside of the trunk lid, so he obviously drives around with the trunk open from time to time.

I was behind him this morning but didn’t get to talk to him.His first name is Darryl(spelling ?)but I forgot his last name.Use to run an auto upholstery shop on that very corner. He does bow hunt and has killed some nice deer before.

I believe I know this Darryl person. I know his last name, but won’t say here. He has killed some nice bucks in the past. I also agree with Mark that looks like a broken arrow possibly coming out of his neck. What a morning to kill a big buck with a bow. I wonder if he was actually in a treestand or maybe a ground blind. Congratulations to Darryl. I guess this proves you don’t have to have big hunting trucks or other fancy gear to be a successful hunter!

Deer’s face looks like an old deer. Looks like it has been field dressed.

Question: Could you be charged with littering for field dressing a deer on the side of the highway? LOL

Wow! That pic is 4 blocks from my house. Congrats on a fine deer.

Don’t know who the hunter is but that’s a very nice Buck!

Congratulations to the Mystery Hunter !!!

I’ll have to find a picture of the guy who hunts my land putting a deer in his car. He has a Saturn and the field dressed deer rides in a giant Rubbermaid container in the back seat! The year he got a huge buck the lid wouldn’t fit on the container. That big head and antlers would have been a shock for anyone driving next to him!

For a hot minute I thought Dan Casey had converted…

  13. Mark Taylor | October 30, 2012 at 9:51 pm

    Casey drives a Volvo.

And I would love to see the Rubbermaid transport system!

I figured Casey drove a Volvo.

Why is it when I blow the picture up, the photo looks cropped? Was this taken with Instagram?Maybe it’s my iPhone.

My brother once put an 8 point buck inside his VW Bug. He actually pulled it in from the opposite side. That was a site to see. You adapt when you need to.

Awesome! I once put a 10pt bow kill buck in the back of a Ford Festiva! I still get a good chuckle out of it!

She probably hit it and was hauling it to the wildlife management center. lol

My dad used to hit so many of them on the parway with his van, I told him to start leaving the sliding door open, just to make it fair. Great story. Could only be better with a lawn mower sticking out beside him.

I may be mistaken but I believe I can see five hooves in this picture, either this deer has five legs or there is another smaller deer in there too!

  21. Mark Taylor | November 2, 2012 at 8:11 am

Only four hooves, Clayton. But I see what you mean.

  22. Clayton | November 2, 2012 at 8:33 am

    Mark,
I am fairly certain that thete are five hooves visible in that picture, if you look just to the left of rope-end tied around the leg, the fifth hoof is sticking just above the bottom of the trunk, one is clearly hanging out if the trunk, and the other three are all in a row on the far left.
