Jayden Basham is proud of his big whitetail

What a great shot from Wild Lifer Jim Basham, who had a fun recent hunt with his son, Jayden. Here’s Jim’s report:

“I was going into work late today and my wife had to be at work early so it was my responsibility to take Jayden to school. We chose to be a little late and get a quick hunt in this morning ;) .

I am so proud of how he is developing as a young hunter and braving the cold weather and the early wake up calls that go along with it.  His shooting is really improving. We had some close calls last Saturday morning but the deer would not cooperate.  This morning was different and we had two does walk in behind our stand. After a little wait he was able to put one in the boiler room. Sshe didn’t run far and I watched her topple over about 75 yards from us.

This was his first blood trail we had to “follow” even though I knew where she was lying, teachable moments are hard to pass up with me.  Anyway we will be back out Saturday morning, Lord willing, and hopefully he will have his hands around a set of antlers. One of the deer from last Saturday was a small 6 point that I said he could shoot. He can’t wait!”

Jim, you guys are creating quite some memories out there. I think that being a little late for school is certainly fine when the excuse is something as important as hunting! Good luck getting Jayden on to a buck!

Way to go Jayden and way to keep his tracking skills in tune Jim. I also, even after years of hunting and having numerous deer fall within sight, still follow the blood trail as I would had it gone out of sight.

Wildlife is meant to be enjoyed, not destroyed. Congratulations on killing a defenseless animal; your family must be so proud.

Actually, Preserve not destroy, part of the “enjoyment” of wildlife is occasionally killing and eating it. It’s called the natural order, and humans are part of the chain. We are fortunate to have skills and smarts to sometimes win the battle with our quarry, which you would know, had you had ever hunted, are hardly “defenseless.”

That said, among humans there are hunters and gatherers, with some of those gatherers doing their “gathering” simply by going to the store and pulling out their money. We are proud to be hunters. If you are proud to be a gatherer, good for you.

i hope “PRESERVE NOT DESTORY” HITS ONE OF THESE “DEFENSELESS” ANIMALS WITH THIER PRIUS…THEN MAYBE THIER ATTITUDE WILL CHANGE. ONE OF THESE DEFENSELESS ANIMALS TOOK A YOUNG GIRLS LIFE THIS PAST SUNDAY. IMAGINE IF THERE WERE NO HUNTERS HOW MANY CARS AND LIVES WOULD BE LOST .

    Preserve not destroy

Didn’t Jesus feed the multitude with a fish and a loaf of bread according to the scriptures?

To “Preserve not Destroy” I wonder how proud your family is of you to troll on a hunting site where obviously you have no interest, just to cut down a little boy’s accomplishments, shame on you!
Great job Jayden!! You have every right to be proud!!!

Congrats Jayden! Don’t let cowards that hide behind a fake name get you down. I know you are proud of the deer, and I’m proud for you! Good luck hunting the rest of the season. Hope to see you back on the blog with a big buck!

I’m starting to not like this sight because of the negative comments that the Roanoke Times allows on here. Especially with the kids! It’s awful and it ruins such a great moment. I’m sorry Jayden for all the cowards in this world buddy. You did a fantastic job and it’s a great deer to take. Thanks Jim as well for all you do.

Cowards don’t deter the future, they only perpetuate more cowards. Jayden’s accomplishment while hunting only make me try harder at 50 years of age.

Now if only if I can get some time off from work.
