Sam Rorrer seeks bass, tangles with a muskie

sam's muskieAs a one-time fishing guide, Sam Rorrer has spent plenty of time on the New River.

Using muskie tackle he’s had exactly one muskie. Using bass tackle his encounters have been plentiful. (Granted, he’s spent a lot more time with bass tackle in hand!)

Anyway, here’s his latest muskie-while-bass-fishing catch, pulled from the New on a jig this past weekend. From his expression I think it’s fair to say he didn’t mind the encounter!

Nice catch, Sam!

Sam, good to see you’re still after them. Good luck.

    Nice musky, Sam.

Anyone ever fished the New for muskie using a Suick? I haven’t been in the River since my VA Tech days. That was 30 years ago and we were flipping madtoms for smallmouth. Another 15 years went by before I learned about Suicks…and the pike family, for that matter.

Tim, yes on the Suick. Large and small ones work. There are so many new baits that cover the spectrum of musky attraction that sometimes folks forget the old standby lures that’ll still work.

Way to go, Rat! Ever thought about guiding on the New? Going back to guiding, I mean. Anyways, nice!
