Those of you who read my column in Sunday’s Roanoke Times know that I’ve been at the shed hunting pretty hard this winter and spring. Early on I found a good number, but they were all last year’s drops.
Friday I found my first fresh one, this great five-pointer with a split G2. Not a rodent gnaw mark on this baby, which probably hadn’t been on the ground more than a week. This is my best find this year. Though this deer was on one of my spots I never saw him or had trailcam pix of him. I hope he is still there next fall!
I went out again Friday evening and walked about a mile of woods behind a friend’s house. I found one shed — a spike. That’s pretty rare because they’re so small.
One of my buddies sent me a note saying he checked out his shed traps over the weekend, including checking the cards on his trail cameras. He got shots of a lot of birds eating his corn. He also got a shot of a trespasser, who apparently had a pretty interesting expression when he noticed the camera. To the trespasser’s credit, at least he didn’t steal the camera!
