I am a big fan of the outdoors resources available in the Alleghany Highlands. As I wrote in my most recent column in The Roanoke Times, the region is making a push to lure tourists based on those resources.
If I had to pick my favorite place up that way I think it would be Lake Moomaw. I’ve never had particularly great fishing there, though I know the lake has potential. I just love the setting and the modest crowds. And it’s all PUBLIC.
The Jackson River tailwater is probably second. Were it not for the ubiquitous “You are not welcome!” signs (they don’t actually say that, but y’all know what I mean) along the river’s banks, it might even be my favorite spot up there.
