I sent the shot of the “Guess the weight” bear to Jaime Sajecki, the DGIF biologist who oversees the state’s bear program. Here’s her reply, along with a couple pictures she sent back:
“Thanks for the bit of fun today! Based on ear-to-head ratio and the fact that it is not very filled out (belly isn’t that big), but solid looking, I would put my guess at about 130-150 or so.
I have attached one I think is about the same size (It is the bear from Roanoke that spent 11 months at the ABR in TN). This one weighed 141 when we released him but he had his winter hair. The bear in the photo looks like the guard hairs (which can be 4” long and add some bulk) are shed.
I also attached a photo of an 800-pounder for laughs.”
