The topic was natural deer lures, such as those that use deer urine, and the possibility that such lures could have on the spread of chronic wasting disease.
Without getting too deep into it at this point, the short of it is that it’s a scientific fact that the prions that carry CWD can be carried in urine. So, what happens if urine collected at a deer farm comes from a CWD-infected deer? When that urine goes into a commercial lure and a hunter pours it onto a scent wick or into a scrape, can a deer that licks that scent wick or scrape then become infected with CWD?
This is all very theoretical at this point, but Dr. Kirchgessner and biologists at the DGIF are concerned enough that they’re asking hunters to avoid using natural deer lures. If hunters feel they must use lures, the DGIF is requesting those hunters use synthetic lures.
Which gets me back to the question in the title. Do many of you use lures? If you do, which ones? And are you willing to try synthetic lures?
