Eddie Monger checked in this morning from Central Virginia. He said he hasn’t been hunting much, but did manage to down his first coyote with his crossbow.

Eddie you have just made pet owners day!
Nothing against the hunter, but why kill a beautiful animal like that just for sport? As far as I know you can’t eat a coyote….sad.
Jamie as beautiful as they are they are a non native species in Virginia reeking havoc on deer and turkey populations. As well as people’s house pets. They all need to go.
To answer your question, coyotes are considered a nuisance animal and can be killed year round with the exception of national forest land. Like amateur said if you are a pet owner then you should be cheering. Coyotes are carnivores and will gladly dine on a small dog or a cat if given the opportunity. This past Thursday morning I listened to two different packs howling as I sat in my tree stand, yes I said packs. There were at least 4-5 in one group based on the multiple howling and yipping I heard.. The other pack was further away but had multiple yotes as well. The pack closet to me was in the woods in between my friends house and his in- laws where I hunt. I listened to his mother in law yelling for their dog to get back in the house. My friend has 2 small children and yes if given the opportunity and if they were hungry enough a pack could attack a small child. So yes shoot every yote you see and feed them to the buzzards, they’ll eat them so don’t worry about the meat going to waste.
True you can not eat a coyote. They do love to eat small dogs, cats, young deer, turkeys, small farm animals. They are getting overpopulated in many areas and they need to be controlled.

A friend of mine had their small dog taken by a coyote a month ago over in Christiansburg. It jumped over a 5ft fence grabbed the Yorkie Dachshund mix in the matter of minutes after letting it out to potty. It was back over the fence and gone.
They told me they had been seeing the Coyote near the fence line about same time they would let the dog out to go potty. This shows you that these animals are thinkers and they can estimate the time a potential prey will be in an area just like an alligator.
They are opportunistic and will not hesitate to kill. And as beautiful as you may see like Snakes and I love snakes.
I, we all have our limits.
