“Ray came to Roanoke to hunt with me on the national forest in Roaring Run in Botetourt county on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013. This was his first time hunting in Roaring Run. I put him on a stand on the point of a ridge that overlooked where 4 hollows meet. My family has killed 4 nice bucks and several small bucks and does in this same area over the years. We call it the HONEY HOLE.
At about 9:25 am I heard a shot and I knew it was him or our other hunting partner, Jeff “RED PEPPER” Mullins. (Jeff earned his nickname the same day when he was eating his MRE.) I received a text shortly there after that it was Ray’s shot and he texted me “ I just shot a big monster buck.”He shot it with a 300 short mag and the deer didn’t run 30 yards.
Getting the deer out required a two-hour drag, during which Ray stated that this drag equaled all of the of the drags combined of all the deer he has killed).
This buck had been fighting. It had one brow tine that was freshly broken and one ear was split just about in half. This proves that there are some nice bucks in the national forest. It just takes a little more work to shoot one and get it out.”
What a great buck. Love the mass and the split brow tine! Congrats to the crew on a great hunt. Also, please expound on Red Pepper’s nickname!
